Keep Your Workforce Safe and Compliant

Substance misuse is thought to cause up to 40% of industrial accidents in the UK, costing businesses an estimated £36 billion each year. For any workplace where vehicles, heavy machinery, working at height, working alone or confined spaces are part of the job, drug and alcohol testing is one of the most effective ways to reduce that risk before it becomes a serious one.

Who needs drug and alcohol testing?

Many workplaces can benefit from a testing programme, but it becomes essential for safety-critical roles. Any business where employees regularly work with vehicles or heavy machinery, at height, alone, or in confined spaces should be considering a drug and alcohol testing programme as part of their wider risk management.

Why it matters for employers and employees

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are legally obligated to protect staff from unnecessary risk. Substance misuse increases the chance of accidents and injuries and reduces productivity, so reducing it through testing is a direct way to reduce risk across the business.

It matters for employees too. Substance misuse does not just increase risk for the person involved, it increases risk for everyone working around them. A robust, sensitively run testing programme, backed by a clear drug and alcohol policy and access to support, protects the whole team.

The testing methods we use

We offer two testing methods, both sensitive and reliable:

Instant on-site testing gives immediate results, with same-day answers and no waiting involved. It is well suited to routine and pre-employment testing where speed matters.

Standalone lab analysis takes longer to return, but provides a more in-depth and reliable result. Both methods return a negative or non-negative result; a non-negative result is sent to a UKAS-accredited lab for further analysis.

For alcohol testing, we use Home Office approved breathalysers, giving instant, non-invasive results. For drug testing, we use urine analysis, either as an instant kit or full lab analysis, always carried out under conditions that protect the privacy and comfort of the person being tested.

When should testing take place?

There is no single right answer, the right approach depends on your workplace and its risks. The most commonly used programmes are:

  • Pre-employment checks, carried out after an offer is made but before the employee starts
  • Randomised testing, giving an overview of the whole workplace at a lower cost than testing everyone
  • Periodic testing, at regular intervals for employees in safety-critical roles
  • For cause testing, used after an accident or incident where there is a legitimate concern

For cause testing is a legally sensitive area, and it is worth taking advice before carrying it out.

Testing is one part of a wider approach

Testing alone is not enough to prevent substance misuse from becoming a workplace problem. A clear drug and alcohol policy, a wellbeing programme that supports healthier choices, and signposting to further support all make a testing programme more effective, not less.
